New Orleans (Toru)

Toru visited New Orleans for business. New Orleans was the first place Toru visited in USA 12 years ago to present a paper at an international conference, He remembers that he was very tired from the long trip from Japan, met with a friend from Kyoto university, ate a soft shell crub first time and so on. Any way, New Orleans is a Friend City of his home town, Matsue city. There is "Bourbon "street(A famous street in New Orleans for Jazz and Alcohol) in the shopping center named "Shamine" located in the train station. The reason why they are friends is that the famous novelist Rafcadio Hern, who wrote many ghost stories like "Kaidan" translated to English, lived in Matsue city and lived in New Orleans before he moved to Japan. It is described in here(InJapanese).

Royal Cafe in French Quarter Jackson Square

The typical day time scenary of French Quater is the houses which have balconies decorated by iron lace and sight seeing carriage(Left Photo). On the other hand, it changes to liquors, modern music and bustle in night time. Anyway, Toru found that the name "Bourbon" street came not from the liquor "bourbon" but from the name of French royal family in this trip. It was little bit sad. He remembered the scenary around the Jackson square located in the center of the French Quarter(Right Photo).

Steam Boat Face

New Orleans is located at the end of Mississippi river and there are several steam boats for sight seeing cruises. Toru got on one of the steamboats named Natchez which Toru got on 12 years ago and enjoyed the dixy land jazz on the boat. Left Photo shows the old lady on the Natchez waving hands to another steamboat. Right photo shows the statue of Louis Armstrong.
